Last Week's Question: Texas Governor Rick Perry has "signed-up" sixth-grade girls for a mandatory vaccination next year that researchers say will prevent the spread of the virus that causes cervical cancer. Texas is the first state in the nation to make the vaccination mandatory by executive order. Critics feel the order denies parental rights and that the vaccination should be a decision of the parents. What do you think?
"I find it strange that folks are having so many problems with girls being required to be vaccinated for this potentially deadly disease. If parents don't have the sense to get their daughters vaccinated someone needs to protect them. I don't see this is any different than requiring polio vaccines in the 1960's. What's the beef about?".........ct "If I believed that the vaccine would protect my child from cancer, I'd pick-up cans on the side of the road to pay for the vaccine for my child. However, I want to ask how much money Governor Perry has and will accept from the drug company that stands to make enormous profits from his order?"........lady in brashear "As a father I feel the government is trying to dictate to us as parents how to raise our children. First it was the seat belts, infant seats, and now cancer vaccinations. While those of us that drive a car are required to wear seat belts, those that drive a motorcycle are not required to wear a helmet....see anything? We live in Texas which gives every child the right to free public education. If education is supposed to be free in Texas then why doesn't the state pay for all the supplies needed by every student. This should also include all immunizations which the state says are required to enroll or stay in school. My wife and oldest daughter are teachers, and I come from a long line of teachers. I am not stupid. I understand that the state can't pay for all supplies. However, with the cost of this vaccine, they should offer it to students, if parents want it.".......TS "Who can put a price tag on one little girl's life? It is a known fact that those young women most at risk are in the lower income bracket of our society. If not forced to comply or if the vaccine remains cost prohibitive, these are the young women who will not get vaccinate. I say it should be mandatory and that Governor Perry should put his money where his mouth is and find a way to have them covered and vaccinated!".......SG
