Dairy Festival Board Announces Plans
For 2010 Festival
From Patricia Chase, Board Reporter
Hello again from the Dairy Festival Board! Thanks to all for making last year’s 50th celebration a real success! We are making plans for another huge festival with all the activities such as the Ice Cream
Freeze-Off, parade and pageant! This will begin with the fabulous “Dairy-Airs” Hot Air Balloon Rally and Flight, which will start on Friday June 11, 2010.
We will provide you with all the times, dates, and places – We want to be sure that you know when all these events are taking place, because we want YOU to be there!
We currently have 12 young ladies who are “very interested” in competing to become the 51st Dairy Queen. We will meet them and their parents at the first event: The Contestants’ Reception on Monday, February 22nd. This is always very exciting for them and for the Board as we all get to meet each other for the first time and they learn about the fun and hard work involved in Dairy Festival. For many young ladies this will be a “life-changing” experience in their life. Just last week, a former Queen’s mother expressed that her daughter being in Dairy Festival was the single most positive experience to date. Dairy Festival gives the contestants valuable skills – how to prepare and practice, creative expression, people skills, and how to walk, speak, and carry themselves with proper posture. The interview portion is modeled upon any type of interview situation that they might encounter – be it college, job, or an important social situation. Board members have been told many similar stories and expressions of gratitude from parents and from contestants over the years. The many varied events do bring about those experiences – from milking a cow to walking onstage in an evening gown and heels!
We also include other County groups, such as the Jr. Livestock Show and Sale, led by Amy Bowen. These are local Hopkins County “kids”, who have raised and cared for a young dairy heifer, which will be shown and offered for sale as a market (young) heifer.
