Cumby ISD 7th Graders Travel to NASA

Report From David Stribling, Jr., Cumby ISD

How far does collecting recyclables all year, having bake sales, garage sales, and fund raisers get you?  It got Cumby ISD 7th graders all the way to Houston, Texas this past week.  The trip planning began as they were 6th graders and lasted all year.

At the end of the year, when it was time to go, the swine flu outbreak hit and all field trips were cancelled that week.  The sixth graders were very disappointed, as you might imagine, and were not really sure how or if they would even get to go after raising more than $4000.00 for the class of approximately 35 to attend.

The class, now 7th graders, left last Thursday morning at 7am and spent 1 night and 2 days at NASA Space Center in Houston, TX.  Their sixth grade science teacher, Mrs. Sherry Chennault, who retired last year, organized the event as she has for the past 5 years at Cumby ISD.  She was so happy to make the trip to Houston with her former students.

Cumby 7th Graders are shown on their trip to Houston, this past
weekend.

The students had activities planned from 4pm – 10pm the first day and from 8am-1pm the following day.  Students got to build rockets, go on a private tour of the facilities, and see inside the actual mission control room of the 60’s as well as the current mission control and ISS (International Space Station ) Control Room.

Students got to see live interactions with the current International Space Station members as well as the American crew in space at the current time of the trip.  A great time was had by all.

On the way home students visited the Sam Houston Memorial as a way to enrich the 7th grade Texas History curriculum requirement for 7th graders.

At the feet of the Father of Texas....Cumby 7th Graders stopped by the
