Many folks from Hopkins County have discovered the beauty of the Arkansas Mountains and the fun of attending the National Chuck Wagon Races in Clinton, Arkansas. The annual event is held each year over the Labor Day Weekend and provides a unique opportunity to join horsemen from across the country, while "taking in" the scenic beauty.

"It's a great experience and one that I'll have to admit I was skeptical about," allowed Debra Stribling, from Reilly Springs. "David, my husband, had attended before and talked about nothing else, but you've never experienced anything like it, until you see all the horses, wagons, and the scenic beauty of that section of Arkansas! There is loads of things to do and something happening all the time!"

"I'll tell you a secret....the other girls and I did sneak into town to the Best Western and left the guys out at the campground to rough it!" continued Stribling. "But, I think they were happier with us content in our soft bed and them having the run of the campfire!"

A series of races are run that feature chuck wagons and a number of outriders, competing to be the first across the finish line. Other horse races and special events are conducted in one of the most scenic valleys, throughout the Labor Day weekend, with riding trails through streams, along wooded terrain and up to the mountain top, are also features. It's a great place to take your horse and enjoy the fun.

"I'll advise anyone that they need a seasoned horse," exclaimed Kelly Humphrey, of Sulphur Springs. "When those chuck wagons start coming toward you, it's just natural that your horse wants to bolt. So, you definitely need one that isn't shy! But, it is a wonderful experience and one you won't soon forget!"

Campfire tales, non-stop action, and plenty of friendly fellowship, are all features of the annual event!

"We liked it so well, that David is out looking for him a chuck wagon to enter next year!" exclaimed Debra Stribling. "He's 'caught the fever' to compete!"
