Cumby Man Killed in
Early Sunday Accident
From Local Reports
It was an early Sunday morning accident on FM-1567 West, near Miller Grove, that claimed the life of a Cumby man, who was a passenger in an overturned pick-up truck. Twenty-two year old, Joshua Ray Herring, of Cumby, was announced dead at the scene, by Justice of the Peace Yvonne King, where he had been ejected from the vehicle, in the crash.
Driver of the red, Chevrolet pick-up, twenty-one year old, Phillip Scott Edwards, of Commerce, was out of the wreckage, when officers arrived at the scene. He was disoriented and injured. Officers transported him to Hopkins County Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and later charged with intoxicated manslaughter, in the death of his friend.
Meanwhile, officers at the scene searched for a third person, who it was indicated had also been in the wreck. However, the search was "called-off" when the man was discovered to not have been in the vehicle and was found at his home. The search was discontinued after approximately two hours.
Judge Yvonne King reported that Edwards posted a $25,000.00 bond, on Sunday, and was released from the Hopkins County Jail.
"Neither man in the accident was wearing a seat belt," advised King. "It's sad to investigate a wreck, when a death could have been prevented, if they would have only 'buckled-up', and someone is ejected."
