Como-Pickton Invaded and Took Over
The Hawkins Hawks' Nest
By: Luis Rasgado
" It was a battle zone at the Hawks nest when the Como-Pickton Eagles traveled to Hawkins last night. "

The Como-Pickton Eagles' last game didn't go too well, as they were defeated by the Quitman Bulldogs, and Hawkins was even more motivated after a win over the Cumby Trojans last week. This game was all about respect and both teams left heart and soul on the field.
The Hawks won the toss and chose to receive.
It was kick-off time and C-P's Tellez kicks it off to the Hawks' 20 yard line and they gain 13 yards to begin their first drive on the 33. It only took 4 plays and the Hawks were forced to punt the ball.

Hawkins punted the ball to the Eagles 34 yard line, Bryce Steele received the ball and put the Eagles on the Hawks' 47 yard line. It seemed that the Eagles were into a good game. Quarterback Zach Carpenter handed the ball to Steele on their first offensive play. Carpenter wanted a piece of the action, and kept the ball, on the second play, gaining 5 yards for the Eagles. Once again the ball was handed to Bryce, but a bad move made him fumble the ball. The Eagles recovered the ball back at the Hawks 32 yard line with a loss of yardage. The Eagles handed the ball one more time to Steele, allowing him room down the middle for a 32 yard touchdown run. Tellez PAT is good, giving the Eagles a 7-0 lead, with only 7 minutes left of the first quarter.

It wasn't long before Hawkins sent a message to the Eagles. Tellez kick-off was fielded at the 30 yard line, and Hawkins moved the ball to the Eagles 48.. The Hawks were not going to let down so easily. It only took a couple quarterback keeps by the quarterback, some nice offensive plays, and the Hawks were scampering across the goal line; a perfect PAT between the uprights and Hawkins tied the game 7-7, with 2 minutes left of the first quarter.

The Eagles wanted to gain as much yardage as possible, before quarter end. The Hawks kicked the ball to the Eagles 35, but Trevor Cagle ran the ball all the way to the 50 yard line. A couple of handoffs to Steele was all the Eagles could squeeze in before the end of the first quarter.

The Eagles started the second quarter at the hawks 43 yard line. The Eagles continued to run the same plays that had been successful in the first quarter by giving the ball to Steele. Cagle and Steele ran the ball outside a couple of times putting the Eagles first and goal. It seemed like the ball was going to be given to Steele one more time, but the Eagle offensive coach surprised the Hawks defense by giving the ball to Mathew Sharp who ran down the middle, scoring another touchdown for the Eagles, followed by Tellez's PAT.
Score was now 14-7
With only 5 minutes played of the second quarter, Como-Pickton looked strong and confident after having a touchdown lead against the Hawks and kept this rally going by adding a 20 yard field goal by Even Tellez, after the Eagles defensive line stopped the Hawks offensive plays, and they gained possession of the ball once again.. The D-line seemed like a freight train without breaks, if you were in their way, they were going to run you over. The Eagles went to the locker room at halftime with a nice lead.

When play began in the second half, Hawkins' kick-off to the Eagles, was caught at the 20 yard line, and with the speed and agility of Trevor Cagle, he put the Eagles at the 50 yard line. All through the first half, the Eagles depended on Steele, but during the second half the routine changed by giving sophomore Mathew Sharp a chance to get some experience. Sharp ran the ball down the middle a couple of times putting the Eagles at the Hawks 10 yard line. Steele finished the job by running it up the middle for another touchdown. The PAT was good and the Eagles advanced with a 24 point lead. The score was now 31-7

The Eagles weren't finished with the Hawks. It didn't take long after the Tellez kick-off for the defensive line to stop the Hawks, forcing a turnover. With only 5 minutes left in the third quarter and at the Eagles 20 yard line, the Eagles had another shot for a scoring opportunity and they didn't let it go. Bryce Steele carried the ball to the 50 yard line, then with a completed pass from Carpenter to Cagle the Eagles scored once again putting the score 38-7 after Tellez PAT.

The Hawks weren't ready to give up yet, out of nowhere they came back with a successful scoring drive, before the third quarter ended, and the quarter ended with the score 38-14.
It only took 10 seconds after the beginning of fourth quarter when Hawkins skillfully ran the ball down the middle and scored once again with another PAT. The score was now 38-21, and the momentum looked like the Hawks were "gaining ground."

The Hawks started to come back and it was time for the Eagles to step up their game. Hawkins tried an on-side kick, but failed to recover. Leaving the Eagles on the 50 yard line. Steele and Sharp ran the ball down the middle gaining the Eagles some yardage. The ball was on the Hawks 42 yard line and the Eagles handed off the ball to Bryce Steele for a run down the middle, that produced and Eagle touchdown, but there was a flag on the play. "Holding" was the call and this put the Eagles back on the 49. There was a lot of frustration from the coaches, players and fans. It was 3rd and 12, they tried to run an outside play, but they were short for the first down. The Eagles were forced to punt, but faked the punt, passing the ball to Brodie Ogle for a "first down Eagles!" A hand-off to Sharp down the middle was all it took for the Eagles to score. The score was now 45-21

The Hawks didn't let up, just minutes after the Eagles scored, Hawkins soon gained strength and scored another touchdown and PAT to make the score 45-28.. Mathew Sharp sealed the Hawks hope of a victory, by scoring one more touchdown to finish the game with Como-Pickton taking the win.

Final Score
Como-Pickton 52 Hawkins 28
