Como-Pickton and Winnsboro FFA Chapters
Conduct Leadership Camp

From Como-Pickton FFA

The Como-Pickton and Winnsboro FFA chapters left early on Monday morning, to attend this year's joint Leadership Camp, at Broken Bow Lake, in Broken Bow, Oklahoma. In recent years, the two chapters have combined efforts to make the experience more meaningful and to learn how to work with a larger group.

This year's camp began with a period of fun, swimming in Broken Bow Lake.

Como-Pickton and Winnsboro FFA officers began this year's camp with a "dip" in Broken Bow Lake.

After arriving at the cabins, the group began an introductory "ice breaking" session to familiarize members from each chapter with one another. Officers were partnered with a member of the other chapter and given a list of questions to find out about the other person.

Members had to learn about another member of the other chapter's officer team in a
series of "ice breakers."

Mr. Ragsdale, Winnsboro FFA Advisor, demonstrated to the students the importance of having "all of the right ingredients" as he prepared to make root beer. Students learn that each key ingredient has its own unique characteristics and a specific purpose in the recipe. The final taste test shows that with all the right ingredients and bringing the individual talents together, mixes for equal success.

Students from both chapters were challenged to use their leadership skills they had learned in the camp and plan a bi-chapter activity that would benefit both chapters. The students were asked to first brainstorm and arrive at an idea. That idea became the goal of the entire group, and each student lent their own creativity in planning the activity that will be hosted after school starts, with both chapters participating.

Students each had food preparation duty, when paired with someone in the other chapter, and were required to prepare a meal for the entire group.

One of the last camp activities was a canoe trip on Broken Bow Lake, where again officers were paired with a member of the other chapter and they had to learn how to work together to make the trip.

The FFA Officers returned home to Northeast Texas, on Wednesday, following a fun and learning experience, where they will continue to work with members of the other chapter, to officially conduct the joint chapter effort, during the fall semester.

"It's a great, great camp for the officers to learn to work with others and to learn about their own strengths and weaknesses," expressed Michael Bowen, FFA Advisor for Como-Pickton. "Our entire chapter will benefit with the activity planned after school starts and these officers have learned valuable lessons in leading others!"
