Como-Pickton Youth Stew & Auction
Raises $6000.00, Tuesday Night

Michael Mund with Lone Star Milk Producers and Brad Johnson with Northeast Texas Farmers
Co-op were among the first in line for stew and then were major purchasers and supporters at
the auction.

It was a big night at Como-Pickton School, when students in the CTE (Career Technology Education) Department conducted their annual Stew and Auction. The auction highlighted over 75 items that had either been constructed by students or donated by area businesses and individuals, to raise funds for the programs. At Como-Pickton, according to Michael Bowen, CTE Coordinator, the programs include the FFA (Future Farmers of America), Skills USA (Cosmetology & Construction Shop), and FCCLA (Family and Consumer Education).

Students had worked since the beginning of school, constructing the projects, such as bookcases, jalapeno cookers, furniture, drink dispensers, farm gates, and other projects for the auction. Then, they solicited the help of veteran stew cooks from the community, who made three large "washpots" of Hopkins County Stew.

Well, on Tuesday night, folks began to "line-up" by 5:00, and the line just kept getting longer, as supporters came to lend their help to the students. "We're overwhelmed at the support and success of this auction and display of the student's work," expressed Bowen. "We want to thank the buyers, parents, and community for allowing us to meet all three of our objectives with the stew and auction!"

These four students were among those who constructed projects for Tuesday night's auction.

"We decided to do the auction first to create something that would bring the community, parents, and students together," allowed Bowen. "Then, we wanted an avenue to teach students the skills to make projects and offer a way to let people see them, and finally the money is always nice to further the necessities of the programs, such as sponsoring trips, paying entry fees, etc. Well, our community exceeded our expectations and came out with awesome support for our programs!"

The FFA Chapter auctioned a farm sign, to be constructed for the purchaser, to be hung at the entrance to their farm. The sign brought $500.00 in the auction and the proceeds will be donated to the Como-Pickton National Honor Society, who is raising funds for Sulphur Springs cancer victim, Trent Floyd and his family. Following the Tuesday night auction, a secret donor added another $250.00 to the project, so FFA members were able to present the CPNHS with $750.00 for this worthy cause.

Teachers in the CTE Program at Como-Pickton include: Michael Bowen, Vocational Agriculture Teacher; Lorretta Cox, Cosmetology Teacher; Tony Glasscock, Shop and Skills USA Teacher; Malory Horne, FCCLA Teacher; and Dustee Daugherty, Vocational Agriculture Teacher. Some 100 students are involved in the CTE programs at Como-Pickton High School.

"Again we want to thank our sponsors and the many, many businesses and individuals who came out and supported our program, on Tuesday night!" expressed Bowen. Buyers at Tuesday nights Auction were:
