Editor's Note:  It's such an honor to be able to write a story about someone doing something good, especially when it involves high school students, that many times feel that their positive efforts are seldom noticed. Congratulations to the Sophomore Class at Como-Pickton High School for creating memories that will last a lifetime and doing something special that inspires us all.

"It just seems like the same students get voted for almost every honor in our class," remarked a group of Como-Pickton High School sophomore girls, as they began looking among their classmates for nominees for 2009 Halloween Carnival Queen & King. "I think we should do something this year, different!"

The above conversation was all it took for fellow sophomores at Como-Pickton High School to join forces and honor one of their classmates that might be overlooked on many occasions. They nominated Callie McCord, a special needs student, who they say is an inspiration to them all, for their representative, this year. Then, they went about collecting the most food items to make certain that their friend and classmate would be the overall winner.

Hugo DeLeon and Navy Briggs were named Elementary
King & Queen, representing 3rd grade.

"We invited sophomore boy, Trevor Cagle, who agreed to be Callie's escort, and then we went on a search for food items, to make Callie the queen of the carnival," advised sophomore students. "When the word 'got out' of what we were doing, donations of as much as $100.00 began coming in from individuals, who felt our efforts were worthy of making this happen!"

Then, on Saturday night, at the annual Como-Pickton Halloween Carnival, Callie was presented by Trevor, with all of the other class nominees. Over 1100 food items had been collected, and a smiling Callie McCord, was named 2009 Como-Pickton Halloween Queen.

"It just goes to show what wonderful students we have at Como-Pickton, and what great friends Callie has," expressed a tearful Gina McCord, mother of Callie. "She'll remember this for the rest of her life and was truly honored to be 'Queen for a night' among her fellow students! I'm touched beyond words, at this outpouring of support!"

Cody Fite and Amy Denhartog, representing the 6th grade, were
named Jr. High King & Queen.

"We've learned the value of working together and how truly it is much, much better to give than receive," expressed members of Callie's sophomore class at Como-Pickton. "It created special memories for all of us, that we'll never forget!"

Congratulations,
Callie McCord......
