Lady Eagles Bring Home Big Win

The Lady Eagles traveled to Chisum Tuesday night and returned with a very close, hard earned 51- 43 victory to extended their record to 2-1. CP started the game with intense defense including a steal on Chisum’s first offensive possession by Saxe Daugherty, who finished with 14 pts, 3 Rebounds, 6 steals, and one assist to Bre Peoples (6 pts, 3 rebounds) after the initial steal. Chisum ran a deceptive 1-3-1 defensive set and it took the Lady Eagles the majority of the game to adjust to it and figure out how to exploit its weaknesses. But their intense rotating full court pressure kept them in the game until they could understand how to attack offensively in the half court. The Lady Eagles finished the game with 29 steals as a team. But in spite of great full court defense and much improved half court offense, Chisum was able to stay in the game with unbelievable shots and spending ample time at the freethrow line. “We spent the past couple of days working on defensive positioning, anticipating passes, and not fouling on inside posts and I think we did an excellent job of executing each of those against Chisum. Our front court players made nice adjustments on our interior defense going straight up and not picking up chipy little fouls, and Chisum did a great job of putting in some crazy shots. With a new more intense defensive set, we are going to pick up a few more fouls up top so we can’t afford to pick up whimpy little nonsense fouls that are unnecessary.” We finished the 1st half up by 2 with score 25-23.
In the third quarter Chisum began to exploit our pressure defense and cause us to make several turnovers in our front court allowing them to eventually take a 5 point lead before the Lady Eagles closed back with in 2 by the end of the quarter with Chisum leading 35-33. Kadi Baxter (9 pts, 2 rebounds) was pivotal in closing the lead through her outside shooting which allowing more openings for our inside girls to drive.
By the beginning of the fourth quarter the Lady Eagles decided that they weren’t done and they weren’t going to step back and let Chisum take the win. They began to understand the 1-3-1 defense and how to attack it and draw fouls. The 4th quarter started with all out defensive attacking lead by Violet Perez who finished with 2 points, 2 reb, 3 assists, and 8 steals. And Jordan Carlock (11 pts, 2 rebounds, 4 steals)helped settle the offense by slicing through Chisums defense to draw much needed fouls. With a little over 3 minutes to play, Megan McCoy ( 6 pts, 5 steals, 9 rebounds) converted back to back drives to put the Lady Eagles up by 7. But the Chisum Mustangs would not go away without a fight as they fought back to within3 with just over 1:30 to play when Bre Peoples drove the right side of the floor to draw a double bonus foul putting her at the line where she smoothly sank both freebies putting the Lady Eagles up by 5. Como-Pickton was able to continue their tough defensive attack while protecting the ball offensively to hold on the win 51-43. I still don’t think that our ladies have played their best ball of the season, but that’s ok because it is still really early. I am very proud of the fact that they improved on the areas that we had emphasized. WE are still working to gel together and find the right combinations, but we are having fun and working hard in the process. We travel to Saltillo for their tournament beginning Thursday to play North Hopkins at 4:00.
