Announces Continuing Ed Courses For June

Paris Junior College's Continuing Education Department will hold a 
selection of classes during the month of June, according to John 
Spradling, Vice President of Workforce Education and Continuing 
Education.

Business
Selling to the Government Using the General Services Administration 
(GSA) will meet from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 1. This 
workshop will provide information to teach you how to determine if a 
GSA Schedule contract is right for your company, why the schedules 
exist, whether now is the right time to pursue it, and how to prepare 
an offer that will save you money and win the contract.

How to Start Your Own Business will meet from 9-11 a.m. on Friday, 
June 4. Topics to be covered in this free session include legal 
requirements, feasibility studies, forms of business ownership and 
their advantages and disadvantages, the business plan, finding the 
money, what lenders want to know, SBA loans, and other loan sources.

Free counseling to start or expand a small business in Paris is 
offered Monday through Friday at the Paris Small Business Development 
Center, 1405 S. Collegiate. To make an appointment for free

Communication Plus: Make the Most of Your Message will be held from 
8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Wednesday, June 21-23. Public 
speaking is a fear for many Americans. This workshop will help develop 
and present effective messages according to each individual's unique 
nature. These skills will benefit you throughout your education and 
career.

Child Care
An eight-hour pre-service training is required of all new employees in 
regulated childcare facilities. The training includes positive 
guidance and discipline concepts, age appropriate activities for 
children, developmental stages, health and safety practices, and other

Fireproof Your Child: Match Your Parenting With Your Child's 
Personality will be presented from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Monday and 
Tuesday, June 14-15. This workshop will help you prepare your child 
for the future. You'll discover how your child's unique personality 
influences every aspect of his or her life. You will enhance your 
parenting skills as you learn.

Kids Hurt Too
The Kids Hurt Too seminar will be offered from 6-9 p.m. on Tuesday, 
June 1. This seminar is designed to help parents understand their 
children's needs throughout the process of a divorce. The target 
population includes parents of minor children undergoing a divorce or 
other family law proceedings.

Computer
The Microsoft Excel 2007 class will meet from 6-9 p.m., each Tuesday 
and Thursday, June 1-10. This electronic spreadsheet class will offer 
instruction to perform numeric calculations, graph data, develop 
reports, and much more.

The Basic Microsoft Word 2007 word processing class will be held from 
8 a.m. to noon each Friday, June 11-25. This class will cover 
creating, saving and opening documents; editing documents; the cut/
copy/paste and find/replace functions; formatting text and paragraphs; 
formatting documents; and creating and formatting tables.

The Intermediate Microsoft Excel 2007 class will meet from 6-9 p.m., 
each Tuesday and Thursday, June 22 through July 1. Participants will 
learn advanced techniques to analyze data, enhance charts and to 
automate worksheet tasks.

 

 



Driving
The Texas Department of Public Safety approves the Driver’s Education 
class. The class is open to students at least 15 years of age. A TEA 
form showing attendance, social security card and birth certificate 
must be provided. The class meets from 4-6 p.m., Monday through 
Thursday, June 7 through July 1.

The Defensive Driving class is offered in accordance with standards 
established by the National Traffic Safety Institute of Texas, Inc., 
and consists of six hours of classroom instruction. The class will be 
held from 6-9 p.m., Monday and Tuesday, June 21-22.

Health

 

A Domestic Violence training program will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 
p.m. on Saturday, June 5. This program is designed to help care 
providers understand how to better assist victims of domestic 
violence. Learn how to reduce domestic violence with effective early 
intervention available for law enforcement officers, victim advocates, 
victim service providers, students and counselors.


The Basic Life Support (CPR) class will meet from 5:30-9 p.m. on 
Tuesday and Wednesday, June 1-2. It will be repeated from 8 a.m. to 
4:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 5. This class offers instruction in 
lifesaving skills for respiratory (choking and near drowning) and 
cardiac emergencies involving adults, children and infants.

Basic Life Support (CPR) Re-certification will be offered in a choice 
of two time frames. One session will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on 
Friday, June 4. An alternate class will meet from 5:30-9:30 p.m. on 
Tuesday, June 8. This class is an update and review for current CPR 
cardholders. Written examination and successful demonstration of 
skills is required. The American Heart Association certifies this class.

The Pharmacy Technician class will meet from 6-9:30 p.m., each Monday 
and Wednesday, June 7 through July 26. This course prepares students 
to enter the pharmacy field and to take the Pharmacy Technician 
Certification Board PTCB exam.

The EKG Technician Certification class will be held from 6-9:30 p.m., 
each Tuesday and Thursday, June 8 through July 27. This comprehensive 
50-hour EKG Technician Certification Program prepares students to 
function as EKG Technicians and to take the American Society of 
Phlebotomy Technician (ASPT) - Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technician 
exam and other national certification exams.

The Dental Assistant class prepares students for entry-level positions 
in dental assisting. The purpose of this course is to familiarize 
students with all areas of pre-clinical dental assisting and provide 
training in the professional skills required to function as an 
assistant in the dental practice. The class will be held from 6-9:30 
p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday, and on 4 Saturdays, June 8 through 
August 12.

A Medication Aide Update will meet from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, 
June 17. This session is a fulfillment of the annual education renewal 
requirements for Certified Medication Aides.

The Aseptic Compounding for Pharmacy Technicians course will be 
offered from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., May 28 through June 27. The schedule 
varies. Pre-requisite for this course is either the Pharmacy 
Technician Program completed or current employment in a pharmacy.

Workforce Development
The OSHA General Industry Safety course will be presented from 8 a.m. 
to 5 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, June 2-3. This course provides an 
awareness of general industry safety and health concerns in the 
general industry.

The Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Construction 
Industry seminar will meet from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through 
Thursday, June 14-17. This seminar provides the information and 
training needed to understand OSHA's Construction Industry Standards. 
Required topics include introduction to OSHA; OSHA Focus Four Hazards, 
including fall protection, electrical, struck by, caught in between; 
personal protective and lifesaving equipment; and health hazards in 
construction including hazard communication and silica.
