Local Sophomore Takes Top Honors at
National Agricultural Science Fair
Over 500 students from across the nation met this last week to compete in the National FFA Agricultural Science Fair. To receive the honorary invite, students must have won their division in the state contest. Sulphur Springs High School student, Colten Froneberger competed in the engineering division, placing 2nd on the national level.
The Ag Science Fair gives students the opportunity to research and present findings on a problem which pertains to agriculture. They present their experiment to a panel of judges with data and documentation.
It is an honor to compete with the caliber of projects which you find at the national level. In a luncheon for the award winners, the fair sponsor and executive director of FFA, Larry Case boasts, “It will be the young scientist generated from the Ag Science Fair which will one day, engineer a solution for our world hunger issue.”

For Colten’s science experiment, he designed and tested the efficiency of an oil water separator. His hypothesis was correct in that when adding a filtering apparatus, efficiency would increase. Colten found that a filter containing hay, wool and hair increased efficiency by 30%. The experiment demonstrates a purpose for agricultural products in the BP’s oil clean up.
To date, Colten has won $1500.00 in scholarship and prize money by placing 1st at State FFA Contest and Reserve Champion of State Fair of Texas. In February he will compete along with Jessica Cowley, Kasey Blezinger, Colby Parker and Harley Wilburn for $10,000 in scholarship money at the San Antonio Livestock Show and Ag Science Fair.
