Beau Carpenter Makes It Official to Play
Football For Texas Tech

by: Bobby McDonald

A long awaited day for Sulphur Springs Wildcat Offensive Lineman, Beau Carpenter, arrived on Thursday morning, as he made it official, that he would be playing football for Texas Tech University, in Lubbock. Carpenter at 6 foot seven inches tall and weighing 275 pounds will be a "presence" wherever he chose to go, but said that the program at Texas Tech fit into the goals and accomplishments that he hoped to attain.

Carpenter had enough credits to graduate in December, so he will be leaving in January to attend Texas Tech, and work-out with the team in spring training. "I'm looking forward to moving to Lubbock and seeing what the program is all about," declared Carpenter in a Thursday morning interview. "I'll be taking basic courses and working toward my degree to be a mathematics teacher and coach!"

Carpenter has been a stand-out on the Wildcat football team for the past three years and used his size to an advantage on the offensive line. "He's been a joy to coach and a great influence on our team," expressed Athletic Director Greg Owens. "It's great to see him have his education paid for and to see him go on to the next level of football, at a major university. I see some great, great accomplishments for Beau with his work ethic and size!"

I visited, the other day, with local banker, Tom Sellers, who is a "die-hard" Tech Alumni, and between the two of us, we came up with Beau being the sixth Wildcat from Sulphur Springs to go and play football for Texas Tech. Our list included: William "Tex" Holcomb (1932), Mack Pogue (1954), Joe Brown (in the the 1960's), J.J. Williams, and Bo Radney, who have preceded Carpenter.

Congratulations to Beau!!!
