It was a dream come true for Yantis High School teacher, Carol Harmon Darlin, when she was notified this past week that she was one of 13 teachers in the state of Texas chosen for a a study abroad program, and would be spending the month of June, studying in China. "I applied for the opportunity, but knowing that only 13 would be chosen, I just thought it was a real 'long-shot' to get to go," expressed Darlin, this weekend. "But, I'm going to go and learn all that I can, to bring back to my students!"

"And, that's the spirit that must have convinced those reviewing the applications," inserted one of her fellow co-workers. "Carol has the ability to think of unique ideas to bring interest to her classroom and students!"

Darlin has been selected to participate in the 2010 Fulbright-Hays Projects Abroad Program, and the trip this year is to China. She had to pass a rigorous application process that included examples of her classroom teaching skills and how she would use the knowledge learned to educate her students.

Carol will be leaving on May 31, 2010 and will return on June 30, 2010, but will first undergo a "pre-departure" workshop, in College Station, in April, where she will learn more about what all she will be seeing and studying on the trip!

"I'm just so excited about going and bringing back the knowledge to my students," expressed Carol. "How many times do students in a small, rural school like Yantis, have to learn first-hand knowledge about China? The kids are excited and can't wait for me to bring back my travel experiences!"

Carol Harmon Darlin is a 1974 graduate of Sulphur Springs High School and has taught in the Yantis ISD for a number of years.
