Early Morning Warrants
Arrest Three Suspects on Nicholson Street
For "Bootlegging"
by: Bobby McDonald
Members of the Hopkins County Special Crimes Unit, and Hopkins County Sheriff's Department Deputies, with assistance by the Texas Alcohol Beverage Commision, were up early, at 6:00 a.m., as they obtained warrants and searched the premises at two residences on Nicholson Street, in Sulphur Springs. The first warrant was issued at 116 Nicholson Street, where two arrests were made, of a male and female suspect. Some 345 cans of beer were confiscated as evidence at the location.
Officers proceeded to the home next door, at 118 Nicholson Street, where officers confiscated five bottles of liquor and over 60 cans of beer, in what was determined to be a "open air" store and merchandise facility, where a "bar" type situation was being operated, as well as merchandise being sold such as clothing, boots, and other items. One female suspect was arrested at the 118 Nicholson Street address.
Lt. Ron Plaxco, with the Special Crimes Unit, stated that one more arrest may be pending in the incident, and that the warrants were a result of complaints from several nearby neighbors in the area, to the consumption of alcohol and excessive traffic in the neighborhood.
The charges, Class A Misdemeanors, of selling alcoholic beverages without a permit, carry a maximum sentence of up to one year in jail, and a fine.
