Weekend "Bomb Caper"
"Just a Country Boy Playing With Gunpowder"
by: Bobby McDonald
What began at approximately 6:30 a.m., on Saturday morning in Hopkins County, with a speeding violation, ended in quite an ordeal for local law enforcement officers. However, as Hopkins County Sheriff's Detective Rickey Morgan explained, "It was just a country boy playing with gunpowder, and shows how things can get out of hand!"
Hopkins County Sheriff's Deputy, Jason Poteet, stopped a pickup truck on Fm-3236, for speeding, on Saturday morning, in the northeastern section of Hopkins County. When he obtained permission to search the vehicle, the 20 year old Dike man, that was driving the vehicle informed him that there was a "pipe bomb" in the vehicle, that he had made.
The occupant was arrested and The Bureau of Alcohol and Firearms and a Dallas Police Department Bomb Squad were called to detonate the bomb, that was located in the truck.
According to Morgan, the vehicle occupant did not try to hide the bomb and told the deputy that he had made it using gunpowder, and that it had been in the truck for several days.
The bomb was detonated and the vehicle occupant has been charged with possession of a prohibitive weapon. The defendant was released from Hopkins County Jail on a $10,000.00 bond, according to Sheriff Butch Adams.
