It Was Black Jack Grove Day in Cumby,
Saturday

"About the best way to describe Black Jack Grove Day in Cumby is a giant homecoming!" explained this year's chairman, Angie Strickland. "Folks from everywhere come back home to enjoy the bonds that they've formed in this community and bring their children and grandchildren with them, to share in the fun!"
Despite cool temperatures on Saturday, the town of Cumby, in Western Hopkins County, "swelled" to maximum capacity and the streets of the "lazy" little community were full of people, having a good time. "This is the way Cumby use to be on a Saturday, back in the good ol' days," commented one observer. "When I was a kid, everybody came to town on Saturday and did their shopping!"

On Saturday folks lined the street for the parade that wound its way down Main Street to Cumby School, featuring floats, antique cars, four-wheelers, and horseback riders.
Then, a giant Hopkins County Stew was served from the pavillion, the Junior Class conducted a "slave auction," and musical entertainment was provided throughout the day. Cumby organizations had booths for a number of wares, and the Miss Cumby Pageant was conducted from the bandstand.
"It was a carnival atmosphere all day long!" remarked another obeserver. "There was something for everyone to do, but the most fun was just visiting with your neighbors, your cousins that came from far away, and seeing people that you hadn't seen in a long while!"
Katie Morehead was named Miss Cumby 2010, as well as a number of junior and tiny princesses, during the Miss Cumby Pageant.
