Ash Wednesday Services Held in
Several Local Churches
by: Bobby McDonald

Several local churches observed "Ash Wednesday," yesterday, as the first day of Lent. The services involved placing a cross of ashes on the forehead, signifying the first day of Lent. Ash Wednesday is forty-six days before Easter (the 40 days before Easter, not counting Sundays).

The service involves, usually taking the ashes from the previous year's palms from Palm Sunday, burning them, and using the ashes in the service.

"It's significant of the first day of Lent and allows you to pledge to yourself, what you will be giving up during Lent," expressed one local observer. "It just signifies your Lent journey between now and Easter."

To those observing Lent, the Sundays between now and Easter are declared days of celebration and the 40 other days are days of "giving up" something in observance of the great sacrifices that Jesus made during his last 40 days here on earth.
Easter, this year, will be observed on Sunday, April 4th, 2010.
