Beware of Armyworms!!

Dr. Mario A. Villarino County Extension Agent for Agricultural and Natural Resources- Hopkins County

Armyworm season is fast approaching, Dr. Allen Knutson, extension entomologist for Texas Agrilife Extension Service in Dallas mentioned and some early infestations have already been reported following the past week's cool, rainy weather.  Recently fertilized hay, pastures and forages are often attractive to egg-laying armyworm moths and should be watched closely for armyworm infestations.
During the past few years, several new insecticides have been labeled for armyworm control in pastures and hay and some have very short or no grazing intervals following application.    Mustang Max, Tracer, Intrepid and Karate have provided good control of fall armyworm in field trials.  Dimilin and Intrepid are insect growth regulators and are most effective when applied to small larvae.  Higher rates of these and other products (Tracer) are often required to control larger larvae.  Malathion and Sevin, and other carbaryl products, are still available and effective. As always, users are encouraged to read the product label for use and safety information.
