Begin Practices Early Monday Morning

Cumby Trojans began their practices on Monday morning, and began learning basic plays for the season.

Monday morning marked the beginning of the 2009 Football Season, as the Sulphur Springs Wildcats, Cumby Trojans, and Como-Pickton Eagles all reported for first day of practice. It will be two weeks before they are allowed to practice with pads, but conditioning drills and basics began on Monday. It was the Sulphur Springs Wildcats that were "the early birds" as they began at 7:00 a.m.

Likewise, the Como-Pickton Eagles reported to the field on Monday morning, to begin preparing for the season.

"I'd forgotten what the world looked like this time of the morning," bemoaned one of the Wildcats, as he made it to practice. "But, the conditioning drills will be the success of the team!"

Wildcats were out early and going through conditioning drills on soggy fields, Monday.

Meanwhile, over 40 young men made it out to practice in Cumby, as the Trojans began their practice at 7:30 a.m., and it was over 50 athletes that reported for Eagles Training Camp, at Como-Pickton, an approximate 10 more players than they suited up last year.

All three football fields in Hopkins County were "soggy" on Monday morning, as a result of some 5 inches of rain that fell over the weekend, but it didn't "slack off " practices. All three groups planned to work-out past noon, on Monday. Coach Greg Owens, in Sulphur Springs, was looking at the bright side of soggy conditions, as a cool breeze was blowing across the field, early Monday morning. "We can at least be thankful for a little cooler temperatures this morning, even though they aren't predicted to last long!" exclaimed Owens. "But, regardless of the temperatures, it's time to start workouts!"

Sulphur Springs will see their first scrimmage here in Sulphur Springs, on August 15th, with another one planned for August 22nd, with Terrell. The Trojans will scrimmage on August 15th at Alba-Golden and host Era, on August 21st. Meanwhile, the Trojans and the Eagles will meet-up in their annual, joint meeting, with a game, on Friday night, August 28th.
