Autumn Is Apple Time

Autumn brings a fresh new crop of apples, that are available locally from perhaps your own trees, or commercially from the "Apples Regions" of this country. Apples provide a nutritious addition to the diet and are great served in a number of dishes. Included below are several ways to serve apples in desserts, that you and your family are sure to enjoy.

 

Applesauce Cake

 


1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar

1 egg

1 cup smooth, unsweetened applesauce

2 cups sifted all purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soad

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

Nuts and/or dates & rasins may be added
if desired

Cream shortening, sugar, and spices together. Add the beaten egg,
then the applesauce. Sift flour with soda, salt, and baking powder
and add to the liquid mixture. Beat well.

Add nuts and dates if desired and beat well into dough.

Pour into a greased pan, and bake in moderate over at 325 degrees for
40 to 45 minutes.

Fresh Apple Cake

1 cup butter

2 cups sugar

3 cups flour

1/2 cup cold water

4 eggs

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 cup chopped dates (optional)

1 cup chopped pecans

3 large apples, peeled and chopped

1 teaspoon each of cinnamon, nutmeg,
ginger, and allspice.

Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, one at the time. Add

flour, baking powder, soda, and spices. Then add water,

apples, dates, and pecans, and blend mixture well.

Bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes.

Golden Delicious Apple Cake

 

1/2 teaspoon each of ground cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, and
allspice.

1/2 cup shortening

1 cup sugar

2 eggs

1 1/4 cup all purpose flour

1 teaspoon soda

1/4 cup cold water

1 teaspoon vanilla

1/8 teaspoon salt

1 cup fresh golden delicious apples, peeled and chopped
to about the size of peas.

1/4 cup chopped pecan or other nuts

Mix flour, salt, spices, and dissolve soda in cold water.
Cream shortening and sugar; Add eggs and beat lightly.

Add dry ingredients with apples and nuts, cold water, and soda.
Add vanilla and mix all ingredients well.

Pour into a greased pan and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
