Christmas Cards for Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan
by: Tanya Runyan
It began two years ago when area resident Maurine Steele decided to start sending soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan Christmas cards. She came up with the idea when her son, a U.S. soldier, came home from serving two tours in Iraq said "Mom, being in Iraq is not the worst thing at Christmas, The worst thing in the world is that I'm here, and there are people in my unit who never get any mail"

She then set her sights on sending troops Christmas cards, the first year she sent out a couple hundred cards along with coookies and candy. This year she has sent 27 APO boxes to the 572nd Engineer Battalion to Iraq and has also sent well over 8,000 Christmas Cards as of Tuesday Evening. Wednesday night is the last day to send out Christmas Cards. The cards are supplied for you at the Walmart and Piggly-Wiggly grocery stores.

The cards are being mailed to the First Cavalry Unit serving in Afghanistan and the First Infantry Battalion in Iraq. The Christmas cards will remind troops in Iraq and that we give them our support.
