Hopkins County Schools Extending Spring Break Due to Coronavirus Concerns & Other Closings

School Closings:

Sulphur Springs ISD, Cumby ISD and Como-Pickton will suspend normal operations through April 10th.

All other schools will be closed through at least April 3rd.

Governor Abbott has suspended schools statewide through April 3rd, at least.

UIL and extracurricular activities have been suspended at the schools until further notice.

Business and Community Closings

Sulphur Springs Boys Baseball Association and Hopkins County Girls Softball Association are suspending all activities, including practices, through March 23.

CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital is limiting visitation and children under 12 are asked not to visit.

Carriage House Manor– Families are being notified of the circumstances under which visits are allowed. All other visitors, including marketers, vendors, and volunteers, will be required to postpone their visit.

Rock Creek Health and Rehabilitation, Sulphur Springs Health and Rehab, and Sunny Springs Nursing and Rehab– No visitation allowed.

Hopkins County Jail has suspended in-person inmate visitation. Video visitation will be available.

PJC-Sulphur Springs has extended spring break by one week.

AARP Tax Aide Notice: Due to the quickly changing situation with the coronavirus (COVID-19) they are suspending AARP Foundation Tax-Aide services beginning tomorrow here in Sulphur Springs at Wesley United Methodist Church. This is until further notice.


The Hopkins County Genealogical Society library is closed this week – March 16 through 21, as a precautionary measure. The monthly meeting scheduled for Thursday evening March 19th  is also postponed.  

The Sulphur Springs Senior Citizens Center will be closed until further notice. Meals On Wheels will continue to be delivered. All other activities at the senior center are suspended.

Chick-fil-A is closing their dining room effective immediately. Drive-thru and curbside service will still be available.

The Sulphur Springs Public Library will close at 6 pm on March 17th until further notice.

Effective March 17th, the Hopkins County Community Chest Food Pantry will continue to service clients but due to the increased attention to COVID-19, processes have changed to protect staff and clients. Hours and days of operation are the same with the exception of the Friday Produce Day which is suspended.  Food pantry hours are unchanged and the A/B cycles will continue.  A drive-in is established where clients drive in front of the building, come to the front door to receive pre-packed bags of food (based on family size). NO CARRY OUT will be available so clients needing assistance need to bring someone with them. 

The Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office Easter Egg Hunt has been cancelled and will be rescheduled.

The TxDOT Child Passenger Safety Seat Check slated for 10 a.m. to Noon on March 20 at 421 E. Industrial in Sulphur Springs, Texas, has been cancelled due to concerns about the Covid-19 virus. 

The Kerry Garmon Foundation Scholarship dinner and auction scheduled for April 4th has been postponed until June or July.

The Veterans Freedom Ball 2020 has been rescheduled for August 29th. The place, time, and other details remain the same.

Tanner Higgins Warrior Run has been postponed to a later date.

North East Texas Choral Society’s Spring 2020 concert is cancelled.
