Matthew 6:18
That your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you”

Fasting is a spiritual discipline that has become a fairly uncommon practice in the church today. For any number of reasons, people have become unfamiliar with the power that can be drawn from this ancient practice. Some feel that it’s no longer relevant but this can’t be true because in previous verses to today’s text, Jesus says, “When you fast” not “If you fast”. In other words, He expects you to fast and experience the benefits that come along with it. Jesus is completely, one hundred percent, for you. He would never ask you to do something that would be detrimental to your health or well-being. His motive behind your fasting is not to make you go without something you enjoy eating or desire having. So many people view fasting as giving up something when fasting is not about what you are giving up for God but what you will receive from God. Fasting is shutting down the desires of the flesh because you want a breakthrough more than you want food. Fasting is less about saying “NO” to the body, and more about saying “YES” to the Holy Spirit. When you fast you must keep your focus on why you’re fasting and not what you’re having to go without. The rewards that come from fasting, such as an increased ability to hear Him speak, chains and bondages being broken, and healing, just to name a few, far outweigh the discomfort or deprivation you might feel in your flesh. The real you, your spirit man, is empowered to take control when you do what it takes get it in the presence of God. In this new year, wouldn’t be great to experience a new level of His power and love in your life. Do you want to be able to look back on 2020 as a year when God took you further than you could’ve ever imagined? Seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance and ask Him to show what you can lay aside for a season in order to experience Him in a greater way. – Love and Blessings, Pastor Jeff
