Texas A&M University-Commerce football will see its first significant locker room improvement in nearly a decade, as a $3-million locker room expansion has begun.

“This transformational project will benefit our student-athletes who utilize this space year-round,” said Director of Athletics Tim McMurray.  “We are pleased to have the support necessary to invest in our most precious resource – these talented young men.  Without question, our championship level program will now have a championship level facility when this renovation is complete.”

Donor support for the project is quickly gaining momentum, as Lion Athletics is finalizing its largest private capital gift in the institution’s 130-year history with a proud alum who values student success.  Additional gifts and opportunities for support at all levels will be unveiled leading up to the Lions’ season opener on September 7.

The upgrades will provide a modern entry lobby to welcome guests and recruits, an expanded locker room space which allows for functionality and comprehensive team needs, and permanent sports medicine and equipment spaces within the confines of the existing locker room.  A total of 120 new, state-of-the-art player lockers are being constructed featuring custom graphics, illuminated nameplates, enhanced seating, electrical outlets, and charging ports. The modernization of the locker room space also includes new flooring, custom wall graphics, fresh paint, and modern lighting.

“When I was offered this job, the fact that a state-of-the-art space for our young men was already on the drawing board was a huge positive,” noted head football coach David Bailiff.  “We are already seeing the positive impact it is making in recruiting, and I am ecstatic that this senior class will dress in the new facility at some point during the 2019 season.”

The 7,800 square-foot expansion is being funded from a combination of elevated donor support, athletics corporate partnership increases, and other athletics over-realized revenues.   No state dollars or institutional academic funding is being utilized for this project.  Construction planning and logistics allow for partial occupation in October of the 2019 season.   For more information on making a gift to support our Best in Class football student-athletes, please call Associate Athletics Director Taylor Phelps at (903) 886-5554, or taylor.phelps@tamuc.edu.
