"The Way We Were"

1970's Christmases

The 1970's were a prosperous time in Hopkins County. The dairy industry had expanded and Hopkins County had taken the lead as the number one milk producing county in the state of Texas. We had more dairy farms in our county than any county in the nation, and any country road you drove down, there was dairy farm that milked 50 to 60 cows, and the larger dairies in the county were milking possibly 100-125 cows. The decade began with a turbulent times for the dairy industry with milk prices low and even a protest on the Sulphur Springs downtown square, over the prices for raw milk.

However, by the end of the decade, Hopkins County was "on top" with great milk prices, expendable income and construction of new homes, new milking facilities, and a host of other signs of prosperity. Most people in Hopkins County thought "we'd never look back" as income soared and prosperity was everywhere.

The computer had just been introduced and folks were wondering what we would be doing with all of our "spare" time, once the computer did all of our work for us!

Sulphur Springs had just built two new elementary schools ( Bowie and Lamar in the late 1960's) and had a regional civic center in the plans, and a new high school under construction. And, "Oh! those 70's fashions" were everywhere!
